Murry's, Inc.
Recognized for Excellence in Partnership
|
It would be difficult to find anyone living in the
mid-Atlantic region of the United States
who was not at least familiar with the name "Murry's, Inc.",
if not their wide array of food products.
Travelers on Interstate 95 often see the easily recognizable
Murry's logo on the side of one of its fleet of 18 wheelers.
City dwellers know the popular Murry's stores and their
attractive, customer friendly environments.
Yes, Murry's, Inc. is a fixture in the mid-Atlantic and one of the
most well known food processors in the Washington/Baltimore area.
With headquarters located on the D.C. beltway
in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, the $200 million Murry's, Inc.
has been providing quality meat products and other
grocery staples to this highly populaced area for over 50 years.
Murry's is one of those classic "American dream",
"family business makes good" tales that is told and re-told
among the business community.
|
The folks at Murry's continue to grow and prosper by focusing
their efforts on what they do best and allowing other trusted partners
to provide the support systems that will bolster and facilitate
the core business.
ACUMEN Corporation is one of those trusted partners.
In 1993, ACUMEN was selected from a group of highly qualified
consulting and even "big six" firms to assist Murry's with a multi-year
rework of its' strategic information systems.
All functional areas of the enterprise were to be studied,
improvements mapped, and appropriate software deployed.
A choice was made to implement Foresight's MXP and
install an IBM Risc System 6000.
|
New financial, distribution, and retail store inventory systems
were to be designed or substantially improved.
In addition, a multi-dimensional "palletized" inventory system
needed to be designed that employed complex weight,
wet and dry and warehouse logistics parameters
utilized for picking and put-away operations.
The ACUMEN project team, headed by Project Manager David E. Credicott,
needed to become nearly as knowledgeable about Murry's business
as its key operations staff.
To accomplish this significant goal, dozens of Murry's personnel needed to
share detailed information and business vision so that ACUMEN could
transform that vision into a focused information system.
|
|
Even as the financial and distribution systems were successfully implemented
and the palletized inventory took control of warehouse movement,
all involved realized that the process of continuous improvement never ends.
As a result, ACUMEN continues to work hand-in-hand with Murry's
to improve field operations and implement "best of breed" solutions
to facilitate new business ventures.
"At this point, we look at ACUMEN as we would a doctor.
If we have a pain, we call ACUMEN and they fix the pain."
Matthew Young, Murry's Executive Vice President
|
|
Key to the doctor/patient relationship, of course, is mutual trust.
"I can't remember a more satisfying relationship with a client than
we enjoy with our friends at Murry's",
said ACUMEN CEO Phil Perkins.
"That's why they were the natural choice for this year's
Excellence in Partnership award."
ACUMEN presented the Partnership award at the
1997 Excellence in ERP Symposium
held in Richmond this summer.
It is awarded annually to the client who best exemplifies
the co-operative, trust-based relationship
so critical to success in any business relationship or supply chain.
"I particularly liked Matt's doctor analogy", continued Perkins.
"With that image in mind, we take very seriously our responsibility
to provide preventative medicine as well as pain relief.
In the final analysis, as anyone who heard my presentation at
the symposium will recall, we want to turn our clients'
Points of Pain into Points of Productivity...
hopefully before they even feel the pain."
